Ramor Utd Club Notes 29-11-10

1985 Team Honoured;
Ramor Utd held a special function in Lisgrey house on Saturday night last to honour the 1985 Championship winning team and it’s mentors. It was a wonderful night, and despite the weather, there was a great turn-out. However, the roads were fairly bad en route from Kingscourt; Joe, Pat and Robbie had to take a little detour, but made it just in time!

Phil Brady of Arva, who was Chairman of Cavan at the time presented each of the team and panel with a beautiful framed photo. Thanks to Phil for making the long journey from Arva, and for his kind words. Fr. Tom Mc Kiernan, manager of the team, was presented with a specially commissioned painting of Ramor Park. No night is complete without an MC, and we were honoured to have the razor sharp wit of Mr. Paddy Sheanon. Paddy has a memory like no other and he regaled the crowd gathered with good humour, wit, banter and a few stories that couldn’t be printed!

Fr Tom spoke a few words, and recalled the unorthodox training methods employed by some of the players at the time, which included disappearing acts and continental training sessions! Mentioned on the night were absent friends, and Tommy Sheridan was there to collect his son Paul’s gift. Chairman Patsy Mc Donnell and his good friends, club treasurer Jim the Miller Brady and Fred Duffy were fondly remembered.

Proving that the GAA forges lifelong friendships, a few members of the Kingscourt team came on the night; Pat Faulkner, Joe Mc Carthy and Robbie O’Connell. All at Ramor are delighted that Kingscourt themselves are the Champions this year, and we thank the lads for coming on the night and making it most enjoyable.

Pat Moreland of Sports Connextions, Virginia made a special presentation to club chairman David Mc Donnell to mark the occasion. A sincere thanks to Pat for his support of Ramor Utd, and the fact that he’ll always manage to have the Ramor socks, gloves, boots, hoodies and jackets in all sizes! A very welcome addition to our Community!

Thanks also to Fr. Johnny Cusack for coming along.

The food, served by Philip O’Reilly and staff was, as usual ,absolutely delicious and plentiful! Thanks to Ann Barkey and the hard working committee for organizing a great night. A special thanks to Niall Dolan from John Brady for wearing the jersey!!! Finally, thanks to all those who came along on the night, and made it a wonderful night of fun, laughter and reminiscing! (We even had Cheryl Cole and Danii Minogue in our midst!)

Ramor U-14’s Conquer the Kingdom;
Photos will be available soon for all the players, as a keepsake of a brilliant weekend in Kerry! Well done again to our U-14’s who outplayed the Kerry lads! A sincere thanks to all who organized the trip, and to those who travelled. The boys are a credit to themselves, their families and to the Club.

Ramor Utd Club Notes 21-11-10

Ramor U-14’s Conquer the Kingdom;
Cavan Division 1 U-14 Champions Ramor Utd went to Kerry last weekend to prove their talent and skill on the football field and did so convincingly with decisive victories over An Gaeltacht and Austin Stacks ,Tralee. The lads played two games in two days; one on the Dingle Peninsula against An Gaeltacht, and the other in Tralee against Austin Stacks. The Ramor lads showed the Kerry boys a thing or two about scoring goals and points and about tackling and team work! The game on Saturday against An Gaeltacht was an epic battle, set in the most wonderful scenery, with Mt Brandon in the background, and the fierce waves of the Atlantic in the foreground!

Whether it was the sea air or the great nights sleep the lads had the night before; something was stirring deep within, as they gave a demonstration of a beautiful brand of football. Even the legendary Mark O’Se ,(who had come to see the Ramor boys in action) was very impressed with the skills on show! The game was conducted through Gaeilge, and everyone gathered agreed it was equal to a month in the Gaeltacht!

The next day Kieran “Star” Donaghy turned up to watch the Ramor boys playing in his home town of Tralee, and was suitably impressed with what he saw!

There will be a full report on the weekend’s activities and perhaps a few photos in next weeks news!

Ramor Utd Club Notes 7-11-10

U-21 Champions for the third year in a row!

Ramor-Munterconnaught U-21’s had a magnificent victory over a much fancied Ballinagh side in the Cavan U-21 Division 1 Championship Final on Sunday last. This was the third successive title for this team; in 2008 they defeated Cavan Gaels, and in 2009, they beat Belturbet. It was a very one-sided affair with Ramor-Munterconnaught dominating throughout. In fact, Ballinagh were held scoreless until the last minute of the first half. The half time score was 0-7 to 0-1. Playing against the wind in the second half seemed to serve Ramor-Munterconnaught in good stead as they upped their game and were very accurate in front of the posts, notching up one goal and 10 points to Ballinagh’s 3 points.

The final score was 1-17 to 0-4. Every one of the players, and the subs that came on were excellent, and all played their role in what was a ruthless, clinical victory. Congratulations to the entire panel and to the management; Ciaran Macken, John Brady, Ray Cole, Eugene Sheridan and Donal Farrelly. A remarkable team effort by all involved.

Congratulations to Ramor’s Simon Cadden who won the Man of the Match award, well done Simon!

Ramor Utd Club Notes 1-11-‘10

U-21 Championship;
Ramor –Munterconnaught booked their place in the Division 1 U-21 Championship Final with a decisive victory over the Crosserlough/Lacken amalgamation side, Corglass Gaels. The game was played in excellent conditions in Lavey on Saturday last before an expectant crowd. The title holders were on a mission and they started in rasping fashion, notching up 4 points in 4 minutes, three from Jack Brady(2 frees) and a free from Shane O’Reilly.

It was all one sided as Sean Nolan, Shane O’Reilly(2, 1f) and Simon Cadden registered points. It was the 18th minute before Corglass scored, a point from Barry Mc Kiernan. Kevin Mulvanny replaced the injured Jack Brady in the 19th minute, and both sides had a couple of wides before Mc Kiernan and James Mc Evoy gained two for their side, the former’s being a free, half time score; 0-9 to 0-3.

Corglass started the second half brightly with three points, two frees, and in the 7th minute a goal from Conor Finnegan brought the sides level. A free from the returned Jack Brady in the 13th minute put his side ahead, and then an excellent goal from Shane O-Reilly put four between the sides. Corglass clawed back with a point each from James Mc Evoy and Niall Mc Kiernan(free) with ten minutes remaining. Shane O’Reilly and James Mc Evoy exchanged frees, and still two points in the difference. Points from play from James Mc Enroe (27th) minute, and Jack Brady(30th) sealed victory for Ramor-Munterconnaught on a score line of 1-13 to 1-9. It was an excellent team display with some solid defending, hard work and accuracy up front. Well done to the team , and to the management on reaching the final, and we wish all involved the very best of luck . The final has been fixed for Sunday next at 4pm in Breffni Park.

U-21 Championship;
Ramor/Munterconnaught continued their winning ways on Sunday last with a two point victory over Drumloman in Mullahoran. The title holders went in at the break with a one point advantage with six points, after a very intermittent first half which had a high volume of frees awarded. The second half wasn’t much better and play was dogged and interrupted. However, Ramor-Munterconnaught, despite having had better days, held on and won on a score-line of 0-11 to 0-9. They now face Corglass Gaels (Crosserlough/Lacken) this coming weekend, date and venue to be decided. Check local press for details.

U-21 Championship;
Ramor/Munterconnaught begin their campaign to retain the Division 1 Championship on Saturday last with a decisive win over Lavey in Virginia. It was mostly a one sided affair, despite a good start by Lavey in the first ten minutes when they notched up 2-2 (one a penalty) to Ramor-Munterconnaught’s three points. However, the threat ended there and Ramor-Munterconnaught ran out easy winners on a score-line of 3-19 to 4-6. Our next opponents are Drumloman, an amalgamation of Mullahoran and Ballymachugh. The game is due to be played this coming weekend, please check local fixtures lists.

Congratulations to Kingscourt, maybe the presence of the Ramor '85 team brought some luck!! There will be many clubs, including our own ,chomping at the bit for next year, now that the Cavan Gaels stranglehold has been broken. The remarkable achievement of the Crosserlough 7-in-a row team still remains intact! Ramor, this year came so close, reaching the semi-final. Hopefully we are a work in progress, and with so many strong young players coming through our ranks, we'll be there next year. Well done once again to Kingscourt, and hard luck to Cavan Gaels.

Killeshandra to their credit battled on, but Ramor's flowing style of play served up a total of 1-10 in the second half,allowing them to be easy winners in the end. Score; 3-18 to 0-16.

Ramor Utd Club Notes 12-09-'10.

Senior Championship Semi-Final;
Ramor bowed out of the Cavan Senior Championship on Saturday evening last with a defeat against Kingscourt on a score-line of 1-8 to 0-16. Ramor were unfortunate going into the game without a number of key starting players; James Mc Enroe, Shane Gaffney and Barry Fitzsimons, while others were carrying injuries. However, Ramor started well and were three points up by the 8th minute. However, Kingscourt rallied and notched up a seven point tally without reply to leave a half time score of 0-5 to 0-9.
The second half started badly with both sides kicking a number of wides. Ramor came back to within three, but Kingscourt forged on and dominated play. Ramor to their credit battled on but it wasn't enough, and a late penalty brought the deficit back to five. The final score was 1-8 to 0-16. The odds were stacked against Ramor, with so many injuries to begin with, and the team was reduced to 14 players early enough in the second half. Ramor Utd extend their good wishes to both Cavan Gaels and Kingscourt in the Final, and hopefully it will be a good competitive game of football. Wishing referee Jimmy Galligan good health also ,and we hope to see him out on the field soon again.

The U-21 Championship will be starting early in October, and we hope that Ramor- Munterconnaught will have another successful year. Well done to our neighbours Munterconnaught on reaching the Junior final with a good win over Shannon Gaels.

Senior Championship Semi-Final;
Ramor will play Kingscourt this coming Saturday evening, September 11th in Kingspan Breffni Park at 8pm. Ramor secured their semi-final spot with a win over Lacken. Mullahoran and Cavan Gaels will contest the other semi-final on Sunday next. Wishing Ramor the best of luck.
Please come to support the team.

U-14 Championship; Ramor are Division 1 Champions!
What a week our U-14 team had! On Monday evening last they played Bailieboro in the semi-final in Virginia. It was an epic battle between two evenly matched sides and was described by the hundreds gathered to watch as the best underage game seen for many years! The game had all the elements; penalties scored and missed, point for point exchange, tension, determination and honest bravery. Ramor won by a single point on a score-line of 3-9 to 5-2, thus earning them a final spot against Lacken.

The final was played on Sunday evening in Breffni Park at 8pm, in drizzly rain. It was a very different affair to the semi-final, with Ramor completely on top throughout. While the game lacked excitement, Ramor displayed their excellent skills, notching up some fine scores and tackling well without conceding frees. Ramor went in at half time with just four points to spare having squandered a number of goal chances. However, they forged ahead in the second half and kept their opponents scoreless, and went on to win on a scoreline of 0-18 to 0-3.
Congratulations to all the players on the panel, and to the management on a great campaign. A lot of work was put in by everyone involved throughout the year. Thanks also to the sponsors, and to the parents for their support. It was a marvellous achievement. Another testament to the excellent underage structure at Ramor Utd!

However, a very much improved second half performance netted a total of 7 points, the first six of which were unanswered. Ramor Utd Club Notes, 9-08'10

Senior Team News;
Ramor played Lavey in their third game of the Championship in Kingscourt on Friday night last. It was an entertaining game and was competitive even though Lavey were out of the Championship. Ramor dominated most of the game and went in at half time four points up. The second half saw a brief rally by Lavey and they narrowed the gap to two at one stage, but Ramor upped their game and went on to win comfortably on a score-line of 2-12 to 1-8. Well done to all.
Ramor have been drawn against Lacken in the quarter-final of the Championship; date and venue to be confirmed.

Ramor Minors;
It was an extraordinary and unprecedented week for our brave young Minors.They played Cavan Gaels on Monday night last, but unfortunately incompetence forced a replay; some might deem this was a cruel blow to fair play.
Nevertheless, being an honourable club, Ramor proudly took to the field against Cavan Gaels, this time at home with tremendous support, on Sunday evening last. Other factors, such as holidays and three of our players suffering illness, as well as the distress caused by the weeks events however, did not deter our Minors giving their hearts and souls and every ounce of effort to the game. It was a very good game, with wonderful performances from both sides, and provided great entertainment, aside from a couple of unsportsmanlike incidents. Ramor went in at half time four points down, but started well in the second half with a goal to bring the gap to just one point. Our opponents went ahead by five points at one stage, but Ramor battled back , and in the 22nd minute of play, there was only one between the sides. For the remainder of the game the score difference fluctuated between three and four points, and Ramor battled frantically, but it was to end with an eventual four point win by Cavan Gaels, and it has to be said a deserved win, and we wish the players good luck in the competition. Ramor Utd are extremely proud of our Minor team, and their management. We thank them for their honest efforts conduct, and bravery. Every player gave their best, and the management are very proud of their workrate and commitment to the team.This is a very young team, eight players are U-16, and we hope that the team will go on and compete in the Shield in the same manner. It's tough on the players in their last year of Minor, but they will continue on with our U-21's and Seniors, and hopefully do well.

U-10's;
There was delight in the club on Monday evening as our gallant U-10 Team defended their Ardlow Cup Title at the Cross Field day. The team won in magnificent style, beating a brave Oldcastle side in the Final. Well done once again to all our players. The coaches in the club must be commended for their excellent work with these young players. Ramor Utd surely has one of the best coaching structures in the county. Well done to all!

Ramor Utd Club Notes, 4-08'10

Senior Team News;
Ramor played Cavan Gaels in their second game of the Championship series in Lavey on Sunday last, and they drew the game, and in truth, Ramor were dominant throughout and will be disappointed that they didn't get the win. They defended staunchly and moved the ball in clinical fashion, snuffing out any threat from the Gaels full forward line. Ramor started the brighter of the two, notching up two points in the first few minutes, before Cavan Gaels replied with a couple of Sean Johnston frees. Both sides were eager and battled hard, Ramor conceding a number of frees and the Gaels shooting a number of wides. Ramor were a point down at half time, having missed a couple of goal opportunities, on score-line of 0-6 to 0-7.
The second half was lively, Ramor had a certain goal saved , and the Cavan town side replied with two from play in the 4 and 5th minutes. The sides were level in the 18th minute with 10 points each. Cavan Gaels went ahead with a point from Paul O'Donnell in the 22nd minute, but a Keith Soden free a few minutes later levelled matters. Ramor were calm and in control and Cavan Gales recorded two wides before referee Raymond Kelly blew it up to leave a draw at 0-11 each. Ramor will play Lavey next, while Cavan Gaels face Ballinagh next Friday.

Great win for Ramor Minor Team.
Ramor travelled to meet the Gaels for the second time in two days, this time a home advantage for the Cavan town side. It was in truth a very exciting game and was played in front of a huge crowd. The first half saw Ramor well on top, with excellent defending from our entire back line, forcing a lot of inaccurate shooting from their opponents. Ramor's scores in the first half came from James Bradley (0-5-3f), Jack Brady(0-1) Kevin Mulvanny(0-1). The Gaels scores came from Padraig Sexton(0-1) and Darragh Sexton (1-1). Arann Farrelly saved a penalty kick from Darragh Sexton in the 26th minute of play. The half time score was 0-7 to Ramor and 1-2 to Cavan Gaels.
The second half began well for our opponents and they notched up 0-4, a point each from Padraig Sexton, Ryan Johnston, Vinnie Coyle and Ferdia Donohoe, bringing play up to the 8th minute. Ramor replied with scores from James Bradley(0-2, 1f), Kevin Mulvanny(0-1) . A free from Darragh Sexton concluded the Gaels scores, while a Jack Brady point from play was the last score of the game, earning Ramor a one point victory on a score-line of 0-11 to 1-7. Well done to all for a very hard honest game of football, and we wish the team and management the very best of luck in the next round.

Senior Team News;
Ramor played Ballinagh in the first round of the Senior Championship in Kilnaleck on Friday evening last. The final score was 1-7 each. Ramor will be disappointed as they controlled the game for the most part, and enjoyed a four point lead well into the second half. Their next game , a championship fixture, is against current champions Cavan Gaels in Lavey this Sunday, August 1st at 2pm.

Fixtures;

Ramor Utd Club Notes, 4-07-'10

Committee Meeting;
Ramor Utd monthly committee meeting this Thursday night, July 8th at 9pm in the Clubrooms. All members welcome.

Team News;
The Ramor seniors drew with Lacken on Thursday night last in Virginia on a score-line of 2-14 each. Ramor enjoyed an eight point lead at half time, after a great first half performance by the team, notching up 2-9 to Lacken's 1-4. In the second half Ramor took their eye off the ball, literally, and allowed Lacken back into the game , and theyscored eight points without reply. It was Philip Fitzsimons' fisted point in injury time that saved the day for Ramor and clawed a draw. Hopefully they will pick up some badly needed points in the next couple of games.

Juniors;
The Juniors fared much better and they had a deserved victory over Denn on Saturday on a score-line of 1-12 to 1-9.

Cavan Minors;
Very hard luck to the Cavan Minors who suffered a two point defeat at the hands of reigning All Ireland Champions Armagh in Clones on Sunday last. Ramor's Jack Brady gave an excellent performance , notching up 5 points and doing his club, county and his Grandad Jim proud. Cavan had the measure of Armagh for most of the game, but unfortunately things just didn't work out as planned. It's a sad end to eight months of hard graft by a very dedicated, hardworking team and management.

The Cavan Seniors play Cork this coming Saturday in the All Ireland Qualifiers. The game is in Pairc Ui Caoimh at 3pm. Wishing the team and management the very best of luck.

Ramor Utd Club Notes, 28-06'10

The late Jim Brady;
It was with profound sadness that the Ramor Utd Club learned of the death of Jim (the Miller) Brady, Lattoon, on Wednesday last. The Ramor Utd club expresses it's sympathy to his wife Mary, sons John, Raymond and Jim, his daughters Bernadine, Sinead and Jennifer, his grandchildren, Jack, Cara, James, Aoife, Oisin and Eoghan, his brothers Paddy, John and Brian, his sisters Frances, Kathleen and Eileen, sons-in law, daughters in law, and extended family and friends.

Jim had a keen interest in football and was a loyal supporter of all grades of Ramor Utd football. Jim was a member of the 1958 Virginia Blues panel that won the Junior Championship that year. He was Chairman of Lurgan Junior club from 1973 to 1976 until it was disbanded into the formation of Ramor Utd. He was elected Treasurer at the first meeting of Ramor Utd in the Town Hall in Virginia in January 1976, a position held until 1982. Jim held various positions in the Club including Honorary President until his death. Jim's contribution to Ramor Utd football was immense and his passion for the club and game will be carried on by his family for years to come. May he rest in peace.

Ramor Utd Senior Team;
Ramor played their first game of the League on Sunday last at home against Redhills. Both sides had a number of wides and it was point for point until Redhills pulled away with a goal in the 27th minute of the first half to leave a half time score of 0-4 to 1-5. The second half belonged to Redhills and they won easily. Final score ; Ramor 0-7, Redhills 1-10.
The Juniors had a better day, recording a one point victory in their game against Redhills. It was a fast, lively game with some good performances by both sides. There were only 2 points between them at half time, Ramor with Ramor on 1-8 and Redhills on 1-6. Ramor upped the ante a little in the second half, and bagged the points on a score-line of 1-15 to 2-11. Well done to all.

Ramor Minors;
Unfortunately our Minor Team's League campaign ended on Saturday last with a defeat to St.Josephs. Ramor were winning by 2 points at half time with a score of 1-6 to 1-4, but St. Josephs took complete control in the second half. They dominated the half, and forged ahead putting the game firmly out of reach, despite a late rally by Ramor. The Final score was 3-7 to 3-13. Ramor will be very disappointed as they had some excellent performances earlier in the campaign and were hoping for a semi-final spot. Thanks to all the players for their commitment to the team thus far. Hopefully we will get a good run in the Minor Championship later in the season.
